ART OF GOLD - Artist Edgar Medina lights up Houston.

For the last decade, local contemporary artist Edgar Medina (medinaedgar.com) has gussied up Montrose and the surrounding neighborhoods with artwork full of vibrant colors, bold textures and positive messages. Operating out of his studio in the Native Citizen design showroom, Medina’s impact has been profound in the community and, now, beyond as he illuminates new markets with his magical touch.

Last September, he exhibited in the Dallas debut of Saatchi Art’s The Other Art Fair, a leading international show of emerging artists handpicked by a selection committee. Medina showcased abstract pieces from a few of his well-known series, such as Translucent, Pushing the Limits and Live—the latter of which, he noted, is more personal, stemming from his current mantra, “living in the moment.”

Originally from a small town in northern Mexico, Medina discovered the healing power of art as a child. Due to a lung condition, he was often confined indoors or in hospitals. His medical battles, however, inspired the beginnings of his artistic expression, as well as his dedication to volunteerism. Now, Medina frequently participates in charity galas, producing paintings on-site for auction, and he hosts events at local children’s hospitals and summer camps for children with special needs. “I feel deeply connected to those causes,” he says. “I can relate to these kids and being able to give them a break from reality for a couple of hours makes my day.”

In 2020, Medina will continue his presence in local and national art fairs, and debut his collaboration with The Westin Houston Medical Center, which is slated for an early 2020 opening. “I am always amazed by this journey every year,” he says. “I hope it continues to remain a wild ride.”
